One of the best things about small-town country living is the access to super-fresh and locally sourced produce and goods. And here in Clayton, NC, we’re surrounded by beautiful farmlands and rural spaces, making it the perfect town for farmers markets and roadside farm markets. Here are some of my favorite Clayton-area farms and Johnston County farmers markets.
The Clayton Farms and Community Market
The biggest and best, and a fun event all by itself! The Clayton farmers market runs pretty much year-round, with a regular season during the spring, summer, and fall, a winter season, and even two holiday markets. Everything you find here—from fresh fruits and veggies to flowers to baked goods and treats—is grown or produced within 100 miles of Clayton, so you know it’s fresh!
Explore the Clayton Farms and Community Market
The market has been running since April 0f 2009 and has only grown in popularity throughout the years, drawing morevisitors and adding more and more vendors to its list. Located at Horne Square (348 E. Main Street in Downtown Clayton), the Market runs every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm during the regular season, April through November. During the winter, hours are reduced to every other Saturday from 10 to 1 pm. And in addition to their two specialty Holiday Markets, they participate in various city-wide events throughout the year, as well!
Wilson’s Family Market
This charming little roadside market is located at 5368 Wilson’s Mill Road in Clayton and runs from Monday through Saturday, 8am to 6pm. It offers additional bonuses, like strawberry picking and Christmas trees during the winter, and runs its own Garden Center and Gift Shop.
Johnston County Farmers Market & Craft Center
Located at 1410 Brightleaf Road in Smithfield, the Farmers Market runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9am to 6pm and features locally-grown fruits and produce, as well as crafts, home furnishings, and other handmade items.
